Event Details

The Artist & the Astronaut is a documentary that tells the extraordinary love story of two seemingly opposite individuals whose lives intersected during a transformative period in American history. The film explores the relationship between Pat Musick, a renowned sculptor and environmental artist, and Jerry Carr, a NASA astronaut who commanded Skylab 4, the longest manned space mission at the time.

The movie delves into their personal journeys, highlighting how their shared values and commitment to creativity, exploration, and environmental stewardship brought them together. Against the backdrop of major events like the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Space Race, the film weaves a narrative of resilience, love, and the pursuit of higher ideals.

Bill Muench is an educator-turned-filmmaker who spent 32 years teaching high school and coaching basketball in Vermont. While still teaching, he ventured into filmmaking, driven by his passion for storytelling and his ability to connect with people on a deeper level. His directorial approach emphasizes authenticity, focusing on allowing his subjects to tell their stories without imposing a narrative through voiceover. This style reflects his respect for the individuals at the heart of his films and his commitment to presenting their lives with integrity.

Beyond his work as a director, Muench is known for his enthusiasm, collaborative spirit, and dedication to producing meaningful, impactful stories. He is currently traveling the country with The Artist & the Astronaut and is deeply involved in his next documentary project, exploring the historical connection between the Choctaw Nation and the Irish people during the Great Famine.
