Virtual art programs presented by Joyce Raimondo, Education Coordinator, Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center
These programs do not promote any particular political group. They are designed to raise artistic awareness and creative expression in a respectful forum.
GET A VOICE! ART AND SOCIAL JUSTICE (Wednesday, October 1st at 2 pm)
How do artists respond to social injustices? Can art create social change and promote fairness? We will explore issues of social justice using art as a springboard for discussion. Joyce will then demonstration techniques to get your own message across in a poster. SUPPLIES: poster board or large paper, assorted papers to cut and paste, scissors and glue, or drawing and paint.
BANNED: CENSORSHIP AND MODERN ART (Wednesday, October 15th at 2 pm)
How do artists challenge societal norms, at times, sparking controversy? Joyce Raimondo presents examples of censorship in modern art and its impact on artists, institutions, and the public. Following the talk, participants are invited to create art that addresses censorship or challenges the status quo. Have drawing or paint supplies on hand.
POLLOCK: POSTER CHILD FOR DEMOCRACY (Wednesday, October 22nd at 2 pm)
Rugged individualism, freedom of expression, innovation! Discover how Jackson Pollock and the abstract expressionists were supported as symbols of Democracy by the CIA and the US Senate during the cold war. Then create your own painting that expresses what Democracy means to you. Have paint supplies on hand.
WAR AND PEACE IN MODERN ART (Wednesday, October 29th at 2 pm)
From Picasso’s Guernica to his Doves of Peace, Joyce Raimondo presents modern artists’ response to war and their visions of peace. Following the presentation, participants are invited to use their creative power to envision peace in a painting or drawing.
CREATIVE LICENSE: OUT OF THE BOX (Wednesday, November 5th at 2 pm)
What is creativity? How is creativity linked to freedom? Rip up your artwork and create a new one? Use a baster to paint? This live Zoom program highlights the tenets of creative thinking that are exemplified in Pollock and Krasner’s processes and their ground breaking abstract expressionist art. Following a virtual tour of Pollock and Krasner’s studio, participants will create collage-paintings in the sprit of Lee Krasner. Have two sheets of paper, drawing or paint supplies, and glue on hand.
ART: PATH TO PERSONAL FREEDOM (Wednesday, November 19th at 2 pm)
How do artists find their authentic voice through art? Explore the work of Yayoi Kusama, Frida Kahlo, Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and other modern artists who express their inner-self through innovative techniques. Then try a series of writing and art exercises designed to unleash your emotions and tap into your unconscious mind. Have drawing and writing supplies on hand and several sheets of paper.
