Most people assume that mistletoe, mince pies, plum pudding, yule logs, the holly and the ivy, the family gatherings, caroling and wassail, parties and games, all the trappings of Christmas were first brought to us by Charles Dickens. No, Washington Irving was there first, in 1820, with “The Sketch Book” The section known as “Old Christmas” was the first time many American and British readers learned about old English Christmas customs.
